Researchers are attempting to track down 600 people who participated in a in a health screening in Libby 10 years ago. They would like to conduct a follow up study. These researchers don’t have the names or addresses of the screening participants and face another challenge as well, the study involved children and young adults between the ages of 10 and 19, so there is a chance that the patients may not even remember being a part of the study.
The study was designed to check the potential health effects on the people who were exposed to Libby amphibole asbestos during childhood. Because of the confidentiality concerning minors none of the information about these children is available. At this time the researchers are looking to perform some follow up evaluation on the participants.
The researchers say that these participants who would now be between 21 and 30 years of age are asked to contact the CARD to complete a questionnaire, give a small hair sample and a blood sample. The process takes about 3-4 hours and participants will receive a $100 money order for their time.
Researchers have mailed letters to the addresses of the parents from the original study, of the letters sent in July, 57 subjects have contacted CARD to participate in the follow up study. The result of the original study and the follow up study will help evaluate the affect on asbestos exposure throughout the years. This information could help with treating lung cancer, preventing the development of some conditions caused by asbestos and predicting the possible health risks in people who have been exposed to asbestos.
