Mesothelioma Cancer

There are different types of cancer, and mesothelioma is one of them.
Different types of cancer have been found to be caused by different reasons. For example, cervical cancer is caused by a virus, while many other cancers (including mesothelioma) are definitely linked to exposure to certain cancerogenic substances, like asbestos or cigarette smoke. Immunogenic cancers are attributed to a poor response of a person’s immune system to a stimulus that a healthy body would not have any problem with. As part of this altered immune response, cells start dividing uncontrollably, resulting in a malignant growth.
Studies show, that people who develop mesothelioma type of cancer have worked around asbestos, or have been closely associated with someone who did. Although, unlike second hand smoke, this “close association” may sound strange when faulted as the cause of a disease, washing a person’s clothes which contained asbestos dust, for example, could cause the undesired—and dooming—exposure.
This is probably why mesothelioma attacks the lungs more often than any other organ, since lung would be the portal of entry for the asbestos dust. Nevertheless, the medical term “mesothelioma” signifies malignant growth in the protective lining that covers most of our inner organs. The lining around the abdomen (peritoneum), the heart (pericardium) and other organs can also develop mesothelioma.
The symptoms of mesothelioma are usually shortness of breath (due to fluids collecting between the lung and the chest wall), and—occasionally—chest pain. Of course, most patients will experience other common symptoms that come with cancer, or any other serious disease, such as weight loss, fatigue, and even depression.
One of the medical students who was working on a cadaver of a person who has died from mesothelioma, has described what he saw as a “chunk of concrete”. Deeply shook up by the site of dead man’s lung, the student imagined how this person must have been “laboring for breath from his one good lung as his heart hammered against the hostile, inflexible mass that no longer permitted it any room for expansion.” Indeed, not a pretty picture.
How and why asbestos dust attacks the protective lining is not yet completely understood. Just as cigarette smoke, or other substances that are known cancerogenes, it is sufficient for us to know that their presence has an adverse affect on our body: the cells start dividing uncontrollably, causing a malignant growth.
What exact mechanism stand behind this adverse affect seems relatively unimportant at the first glance. After all, all you need to know is that if you are diagnoses with mesothelioma, your asbestos exposure has most likely caused it. Right? If you are looking for justice in term of collecting a compensation, yes. But the mechanism that causes cancer to start and grow is important is important when it comes to seeking treatment.
Although most traditional methods fail in their attempts to beat mesothelioma, some alternative medicine approaches claim to have a few success stories. Clinics that use these alternative methods boast of many success stories of the patients who have been diagnosed with this type of cancer, underwent the alternative treatment, and now have been cancer free for as long as fifteen years.
Many alternative treatments are based on that although mesothelioma is not viewed as a classically immunogenic cancer, there is a lot of evidence that points to immune recognition. Thus, although mesothelioma is not considered to be one of these immunogenic types of cancer, there are indeed studies that show a connection between an affected person’s state of the immune system and this type of cancer. This serves as the basis for many alternative treatments.
